about

my first time truly experiencing the vastness and abundance of the west in this country.
sand and clay from learning how to build cob houses...
gathering around outside of the local co-op and sharing a pint of Coconut Bliss ice cream...
walking around the neighborhoods and plucking figs and pears from lawns for breakfast....
riding our bikes to scour the dumpsters and get donations from stores to give away to those in need with Food Not Bombs...
talking with some far out people about far out concepts, like mycelium breaking apart the concrete and giving us back paradise...
I learned that roses are one of the oldest plant families...
the final verse was written years later, after I didn't win first place in a songwriting contest only because my song wasn't long enough.
I had gone back east to the Little River to deliver my first and only child and it provoked some deep inner healing.

lyrics

All it took was a laugh
breaking the dam 'fore it breaks your back
all it took was a spark
myself inside a stranger's heart
and the very first fig of Spring
and the willow tree glistening in the sun
has almost begun
All it took was a glance
blossoming buds don't miss their chance
setting down roots in debris
sowing the fruits that they share for free
and the roses hold ancient love
and the scarecrow sits with the dove
it has grown
how could I have known
sand and clay
a kiss at the end of the day
coco bliss
limitless spoons in a bottomless dish
here's my tune of gratitude
All it took was a voice
with it, the memory i had no choice
now I can finally let go
now I can speak so that others may know
and the river washes me clean
for the first time she can be seen and heard
fly little bird
starlings lift
buffalo charge off that cliff
don't be scared
your little wings will take you anywhere you dare
here's your tune of gratitude
