about

a photograph initially inspired this song. It was a photo of Zapatistas. The women were there in their traditional woven garb, with children in their arms and ski masks over their heads, accompanied by men with guns and magazine clips, also with faces covered.
I thought about the choices those mothers had to make. I thought about how their quality of life was so bad that this was the choice they made. They took matters into their own hands. They joined forces and provided for themselves what the government would not, including schools and medical care.
But what government wants the people to stop depending on them?! They would lose their power. But we have power, more than we realize. But we've let them divide us so we don't join forces. Stop letting them divide us. Most people are mostly good people. But they do everything they can think up to try to convince us that the world is a horrible place. It's a beautiful place! Don't let the fear mongering get to you! It's not in our nature to incite violence. Only when we succumb to their fear mongering do we resort to our lower vibrations.
Rise above the fear and hate! Stand up for love!!!

lyrics

She wore her brightest green
a belt of magazines
a baby in a sling content to fondle for a drink
you could see nothing but her eyes
standing since before sunrise

raised rolling out corn flour
nothing but a hint of sunlight on the hour
would he lift her skirt today?
would he garnish all her pay?
mama, please come and take me home.
if this doesn't end I'm bound to roam.

So long, this life ain't meant for me.
I wanna go somewhere where I can keep my dignity.
and if I have to bear arms to make them see
if it isn't them it surely will be me.
I'm taking up the fight for autonomy.

My daughters will learn from me
how to mend a wounded knee, not to get stuck in tragedy.
how to weave a skirt, put their fingers in the dirt
and when they fight they'll look you straight in the eye
they will not be marginalized.

I wish I could say that we're in our glory days
I've never been one to complain
but there's still work to do and for you I will be true
if there's one thing i can promise on our name
your struggle won't be in vain

she's not there alone
they've got their bags of bones
they raise their heads up high
fallen compadres hear their cry
their resolve is stronger than before
we don't need you anymore!

So long, this life ain't meant for me
I wanna go somewhere where i can keep my dignity
and if I have to bear arms to make them see
if it isn't them it surely will be be
I'm taking up the fight for autonomy
(repeat chorus)
